Purpose and limitations

Map controls

• Gear opens Tools & Settings.
• The crosshair opens Search.
• Layers opens chart, imagery, basemap and overlay controls.
• Zoom using the mouse wheel or trackpad, keyboard +/−, or pinch gestures on touchscreens. Arrow keys pan the map.
• The coordinate readout follows the selected coordinate format in Tools & Settings.

Search

• Enter one search term, then choose the search source:
• General searches worldwide mapped places and features such as towns, cities, rivers, reefs, islands, countries and points of interest.
• Aus marinas searches the Pinpoint Marine Australian marina dataset and opens the full marina information popup when selected.
• User data searches saved routes, tracks and markers.
• AIS vessels searches the shared current Australian AIS dataset by vessel name, MMSI or callsign. Selecting a positioned result enables AIS, moves the map to the vessel and opens its AIS popup.
• General-search results are not selected automatically. Choose the required result first. A selected world-search result can be saved as a marker.
• Selecting a saved marker from User data unhides it and moves the map to that marker.

Layers

• Australia charts — AHO provides automatic Australian hydrographic chart coverage.
• New Zealand charts — LINZ provides automatic New Zealand raster chart coverage, selecting chart products by geographic coverage and published scale.
• Australian charts are drawn above LINZ charts where both are enabled.
• State and territory aerial imagery can be enabled independently where coverage is available.
• Basemaps include No basemap, Satellite, Street and Terrain. Light/dark presentation follows the selected appearance mode.
• Navigation overlays include the marina dataset, OpenSeaMap marks and AIS vessels supplied by the shared Pinpoint Marine AIS backend.
• IMAS bathymetry is displayed above Australian charts and state aerial imagery, but below TAS bathymetry contours, marina data and OpenSeaMap marks.
• Bathymetry and chart layers are reference products only and are not a substitute for current official navigation products.

GPS, heading and MOB

• The lower-left GPS control enables browser geolocation and displays vessel position, accuracy, speed and course where available.
• Heading/forecast mode displays a forward line using device/GPS heading where available, otherwise movement-derived course.
• MOB immediately places a Man Overboard marker at the current GPS position. The marker can later be renamed, relocated, reclassified or deleted through Markers.
• GPS remains a consumer-device reference and should not be treated as a certified navigation sensor.

Routes

• Open Tools & Settings → Routes.
• Create a route with +, enter its basic parameters, then select Draw to place route points on the map.
• During drawing use Undo, Finish or Cancel.
• After Finish, review the route before saving. Saved routes show leg information and totals including distance, estimated time and fuel where configured.
• Saved routes can be edited, hidden/shown, labelled and deleted.

Tracks

• Open Tools & Settings → Tracks to start a recording.
• Recording returns to the map. A recording control remains available so the track can be finished or cancelled.
• Finish returns to the Tracks page for review and saving.
• Saved tracks can be hidden/shown or deleted. Track data remains local unless exported.

Markers

• Open Tools & Settings → Markers, select +, then choose Place marker.
• Select the desired map position, then use Relocate, Cancel or Finish.
• After Finish, configure the marker name, icon and Notes, then save it.
• Marker popups show name and position and provide quick actions for rename, relocate and delete.
• Markers can be hidden/shown individually or collectively. Marker-name labels can be displayed at suitable map zoom levels.
• Marker types include general-purpose categories such as fishing, marina/berth, information, camera and MOB.

Measure

• Select Tools & Settings → Measure to return directly to the map.
• Click/tap to add measurement points. After three or more points, selecting the first point can close the shape into a polygon.
• Measurement nodes can be repositioned. Use Finish to complete the current measurement and Clear to remove measurement graphics.
• Measurements are planning/reference values only.

Depth

• Select Tools & Settings → Depth, then choose a location on the map.
• The tool requests an approximate IMAS bathymetry value where data is available.
• Depth results are indicative only and are not suitable for navigation or formal UKC assessment.

Data — import and export

• Open Tools & Settings → Data.
• Import data accepts Pinpoint Marine route, track, marker or combined-data JSON files. Multiple files can be selected together.
• Routes, tracks and markers can each be exported as all items or as an individual selected item.
• Markers can also be exported by marker type, for example all Fishing markers.
• Export all data creates one backup containing all saved routes, tracks and markers.
• Exported files are the recommended portable backup before clearing browser data or moving to another device/browser.

Display and units

• Appearance can be set to Light or Dark.
• Coordinate display can use Decimal Degrees or MGA2020 Northing/Easting where applicable.
• Length, depth, area, speed and volume units can be selected independently.
• Dark mode also applies a low-light presentation to supported chart layers and interface elements.

Local data and New Zealand chart access

• Routes, tracks, markers, marker notes and user preferences are stored locally in the browser unless explicitly exported.
• Clearing browser/site data can remove locally saved information.
• New Zealand chart access is provided through a same-origin Netlify proxy. The LINZ credential is read server-side from the LINZ_API_KEY environment variable and is not stored in or exposed to the browser.

Data sources

• Australian hydrographic chart imagery: Australian Hydrographic Office.
• New Zealand raster nautical chart imagery and chart index: Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).
• Bathymetry: IMAS/NESP and TAS LIST/TAFI sources where enabled.
• Basemaps and worldwide search may rely on external mapping/geocoding services and can vary in coverage, availability and detail.
